Sports Writer Nancy Haggerty, Journal News Win Armory’s Stan Saplin Media AwardPublished by
Sports writer Nancy Haggerty and the Journal News are recipients of the 10th annual Stan Saplin Media Award, Armory Foundation President Dr. Norbert Sander announced. Haggerty, who is the track and field beat writer for the Journal News, will be formally honored during the 82st Eastern States IndoorChampionships on Tuesday March 1 taking place at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory. “Nancy Haggerty has had a long career in sports reporting most recently carrying on the great tradition of the Journal News with its excellent coverage of track and field over the many years,” Dr. Sander said. “Nancy represents as well the many Journal News reporters who have gone before her bringing track and field to a wide audience in the Lower Hudson region" The Stan Saplin Media Award is named after the late athletics journalist and statistician Stan Saplin who died in 2002. “Winning this award is huge because it reflects the dedication of many Journal News staff members, including our photojournalists,” Haggerty said. “They’ve captured countless memorable moments in time at The Armory. “What stands out week-in and week-out is track and field’s unusual camaraderie – opponents wanting very much to win and going all out to do so, but also genuinely happy for another’s success. You don’t find this – not even a hint of it – in most other sports and never, I think, in any on the consistent basis that it’s found in this one. It’s unique, refreshing and really reflects sports at its best.” Haggerty, who lives in Somers, NY, has been in the journalism profession for more than 30 years, including stints as a sports editor and sports reporter. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Haggerty has been covering track & field for the Journal News since 2014. Past Stan Saplin Media Award winners from 2007- 2015 include Frank Litsky (The New York Times), William J. Miller (The New York Times), Bill Moore (Amsterdam News), Ed Grant (New Jersey Track), Walt Murphy (Eastern Track), Elliott Denman (Asbury Park Press), Marc Bloom (The Runner Magazine and The New York Times), Peter Gambaccini (Runner's World), Derek Alvez (Staten Island Advance) and George Kochman (Staten Island Advance). During the evening The Armory will have a Bill Miller Memorial Tribute. Miller, the beloved sportswriter and raconteur, died last spring at age 91. He covered track and field, primarily high school, and other sports as a freelance writer for The New York Times for 65 years, beginning in 1947, after serving in the Pacific in the war. In 2008, Miller received the Stan Saplin Media Award. More news |
